Sydney, Oct 2, 2015 – Just For Laughs Sydney kicks off its 5th anniversary celebration with the first announcement of this year’s amazing line-up, featuring some of the world’s biggest and funniest international and Australian comedians. Taking place Monday, October 19, through to Sunday, October 25, 2015, the annual week-long event will return to the prestigious Sydney Opera House. This year, the festival will expand with performances to also be held at the State Theatre and Qantas Credit Union Arena. Tickets for Just For Laughs Sydney go on sale Monday, July 6 at 9:00 AM.
RUSSELL BRAND – acclaimed comedian, presenter, author, actor and international artist – will lead the lineup for this year’s festival. Brand will perform his new show Trew World Order at the Opera House on Friday, October 23, and a massive arena show at Qantas Credit Union Arena on Saturday, October 24. Following his phenomenal success as a stand-up, Brand turned his attentions to Hollywood, where, in 2008, he played rocker “Aldous Snow” in the box office hit comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Since then, Brand has starred in several films including Rock Of Ages, Arthur, Hop, Get Him to the Greek, Bedtime Stories, The Tempest and Paradise. He also voiced the character “Dr. Nefario” in the hugely successful Despicable Me animated movie franchise. In February 2015, Brand launched The Trews, a YouTube series where he offers his unique take on current affairs, and which has a fanbase that has rapidly grown to over one million subscribers. He also started a twice-weekly podcast, The Russell Brand Podcast, where he reunited with his former radio partners Matt Morgan and poet Mr. Gee.
JOHN BISHOP will join the JFL Sydney lineup with his latest show. Bishop is one of the UK’s biggest names in comedy, and will perform at the Opera House on Wednesday, October 21. Within three years of his first-ever gig, Bishop was playing to sell-out arenas, and was crowned the fastest-selling stand-up on DVD in UK history. Bishop has had huge success with his own comedy entertainment series, including John Bishop’s Australia, John Bishop’s Christmas Show, John Bishop’s Britain, John Bishop’s Only Joking, and his latest The John Bishop Show. He spent 2012 writing his autobiography, How Did All This Happen?, and completed a triathlon challenge in aid of Sport Relief, raising over £1.6million for the charity. His autobiography was released October 2013. This multi-talented award-winning performer, writer and producer has established himself as one of the most sought-after talents in the UK.
DANNY BHOY will return to Australia with his brand-new show Please Untick This Box, with shows at the Sydney Opera House and State Theatre. Bhoy began his stand-up career in 1998 and, a year later, he won the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award in the UK. In 2001, he debuted his first solo show at the Edinburgh Festival to critical acclaim. Since then, he has had nine return visits to the Edinburgh Fringe, packing the biggest venues at the festival. Bhoy has become one of the most globally successful and prolific comics working in the world today. He has built up a massive following in Australia and New Zealand where his tours have broken attendance records. Bhoy’s unique brand of storytelling and razor-sharp wit has been described as “effortlessly funny” and “the stand-up equivalent of Bill Bryson.”
Twenty years ago, Britain’s favourite publican turned politician AL MURRAY, aka The Pub Landlord, embarked on his one-man mission as the King Cnut of Common Sense. He has since become one of the most recognisable and successful comics in the UK with his alter-ego The Pub Landlord, selling out venues including The O2 arena. To celebrate this 20-year milestone, The Guv will bring his new live show One Man, One Guvnor to JFL Sydney, performing over three nights at the Opera House Playhouse on October 19, 20 and 21. Murray has won the Perrier Award (after a record four successive nominations) and secured Olivier Award nominations for both his celebrated sell-out West End runs. His book The Pub Landlord’s Book of British Common Sense was a best-selling title, selling over 300,000 copies. He then released Think Yourself British, and his ultimate pub quiz book The Pub Landlord’s Great British Pub Quiz Book. He also released his first out-of-character book, Watching War Films With My Dad, in 2013. Murray’s British comedy award-winning television series Al Murray’s Happy Hour has delighted viewers and critics alike with his no-nonsense treatment of celebrity guests.
OMID DJALILI, internationally renowned stand-up comedian/actor and winner of the Time Out Comedy Award, will bring his show Iranalamadingdong to the Opera House on Thursday, October 22. Djalili’s first significant stand-up career success was at the 1995 Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Short, Fab Kebab Shop Owner’s Son, followed by The Arab and the Jew in 1996. He has performed sold-out shows around the world including Ireland, Sweden, Belgium and the USA, the latter of where he had his own HBO Special and did 22 episodes on the NBC sitcom Whoopi with Whoopi Goldberg. Djalili has appeared in a number of films, most notably Gladiator, The Mummy, The World Is Not Enough, Spy Game, Notting Hill, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Sex and the City 2.
Multi-award-winning comic CELIA PACQUOLA will perform at the Opera House on Sunday, October 25. Pacquola has cemented her position as one of the most in-demand comedians in Australia, while also forging a comedy career in the UK and abroad. Her stand-out solo festival shows Let Me Know How It All Works Out, Delayed, Flying Solos, and Am I Strange? have all garnered top reviews wherever they were performed, from Melbourne to Edinburgh. In 2014, Pacquola was nominated for the Barry Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for Best Show, won the Amused Moose Laughter Award at the Edinburgh Festival, and in 2013 and 2015, she was nominated for Best Comedy at Adelaide Fringe. Pacquola has also appeared at the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs Festival. Pacquola has acted in television shows including the AACTA-award-winning Laid, the Logie-Award-winning drama Offspring and in Working Dog’s latest series Utopia. Her wit and jokes have led her guest appearances on Spicks and Specks, The Project, Good News Week, Dirty Laundry, Have You Been Paying Attention? and more. Internationally, Pacquola has been a guest on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Chelsea Lately and The Rob Brydon Show.
The Comedy Channel’s JUST FOR LAUGHS: THE STAND UP SERIES, hosted by one of Australia’s favourite comedians, DAVE THORNTON, returns for a third season this year. Six live shows will be filmed exclusively for Foxtel in front of a live audience from the Playhouse at the Sydney Opera House from Thursday, October 22, to Saturday, October 24. It will feature over 30 top international and local guests including Ronny Chieng, Cal Wilson, Hannah Gadsby, Joel Creasey, Tom Ballard, Anne Edmonds, Damien Power, Tommy Little and many more to be announced.
